It lies on the crossroads of the historic ‘Silk Route’ from Sinkiang to West Asia and to the plains of India. There are a number of interesting places and monasteries to visit in and around Leh, such as – The Leh Palace, the monasteries of Shey, Hemis, Alchi, Thikse and Lamayuru. The landscape of Leh also provides for a number of adventure activities such as Mountaineering, White Water Rafting and Trekking in Ladakh. Leh has a number of Trekking Routes with the Markha Valley Trek over Gongmaru La and Gandha La being the most adventurous. However, do keep aside a few days for altitude acclimatization.
